Welcome to Grade Two!
Below you will find helpful information about routines and procedures in our class and our school.
General information:
We are a peanut and tree nut aware school. Staff and students are strongly encouraged to refrain from bringing these products to school as there are children and adults who are highly allergic. Please read labels carefully.
We are also a scent aware school. Parents and students are asked not to wear scented products when coming into the school. Additionally, students should not bring hand sanitizer to school to use.
Planner:
The planner is an important method of home-school communication. Please check both the pocket and the message written on the day’s date. Please sign the planner so that we know you have read it.
If you have not yet paid $8.00 for the planner please do so ASAP.
Balanced School Day:
The balanced school day consists of 2 nutrition breaks (10:40-10:55 & 12:50-1:10) and 2 exercise breaks (10:55-11:10 & 1:10-1:45). It is suggested that you let your child know which foods should be eaten at which break. Please ensure that your child is able an entire drink in the allotted time so that it is not left in the classroom throughout the day or thrown out (and wasted). Some students cannot handle a full drink and food and do better sipping water throughout the day.
Healthy Lunches and Snacks:
Our school encourages healthy eating to help your child perform to the best of his/her ability. Please include food from the 4 food groups and limit the extras. Including protein in your child’s breakfast and in each nutrition break helps to ward off hunger. If your child orders milk, it will be distributed at the 2nd break.
Drinking Water:
Children are encouraged to bring water bottles to school. Students without a water bottle must ask permission to get a drink from the fountain. Please write your child’s name on the bottle and ensure he/she brings it home regularly (preferably every day) to be cleaned.
Milk Program:
Mild cards can be purchased (20 cartons for $18.00 or 10 cartons for $9.00). White or chocolate is available. Please indicate what type of milk you would like to purchase when sending the money.
Sending Money to School:
Please put money in an envelope or zip lock bag inside the front pocket of the planner. Label it with your child’s name and the purpose for the money. Money for different purposes must be sent in separate envelopes as different groups collect the money. Also, please write in the planner that you have sent money. This will let us know to look for it and will provide a paper trail should money go missing.
Scholastic Orders:
Orders will go home approximately once every two months. If you wish, however, to receive an order every month, please let us know and this can be arranged. Payment must be made by cheque only as cash cannot be sent through the mail. Cheques are payable to Scholastic Canada.
Alternate Transportation:
If your child will be going home with someone other than you, the parent or guardian, you must send a note informing us of the arrangement and giving your permission. Without a note your child will be sent home as he or she usually goes home.
Picking children up at school throughout the day
If you are picking up your child please report to the office and your child will be called down. Children need to be signed in and out at the office when they leave early or when they arrive late.
Illness:
Please call the school if your child is absent. Also, please note that if your child is too ill to go outside for recess, he or she is generally too ill to be at school.
Birthday Parties:
Try to be discreet regarding invitations as those not invited are often hurt. We ask children to give us the invitations so that we can help them be discreet. Please ensure that appropriate arrangements are made if your child is going to a party directly after school.
Homework:
Home Reading will begin at the end of the month and continue throughout the year. Home reading books at your child’s level will be provided. Students may also read books from home, the library or the classroom. More information will follow.
Other homework (such as Math games and Spelling practice) will be given throughout the year. We will give further details at that time.
If you have any questions, please ask!
